Cholistan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (CUVAS) is a prestigious education institute based in Bahawalpur, Pakistan. Set up with an objective of furthering veterinary sciences and education related to animals, it acts as an essential center of research and development for southern Punjab.

Conceptualization

The conception of CUVAS came with an awareness of the contribution of the livestock industry in Pakistan’s economy. Livestock is responsible for substantial inputs towards agriculture and rural living, particularly in southern Punjab and Cholistan, where livestock rearing is a vocation.

Southern Punjab, which is a center for cattle farming, had no specialized institution focused on veterinary education and research. This lacuna emphasized the establishment of a regional center of excellence in veterinary sciences.

Foundation

CUVAS was founded in 2014 as a gesture in response to the growing need for veterinary and animal sciences education in Pakistan, especially in southern Punjab.

The university was designed to serve the interests of livestock and agricultural industries, which are key sectors of Pakistan’s economy.

Development

Constructed with financing and assistance from the Government of Punjab, the university was patterned after the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore.

It has evolved over time into a multidisciplinary university, providing various programs and research opportunities.
