History of Tomsk State University

Tomsk State University was founded on May 28, 1878, pursuant to the decree of Tsar Alexander II, as the Siberian Imperial University. It is the first university in the Asian part of Russia. At the outset, it had only a single medical faculty with 72 students. Throughout the years, TSU added to its scholarly repertoire faculties of law, mathematics, physics, and humanities. Nowadays, the university consists of 22 faculties and institutes and educates around 18,000 students.
TSU played an important role in the establishment of science, education, and culture in Siberia.
