UMT originally began as the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), focused on executive education and professional development. Recognizing the growing need for formal higher education rooted in leadership and innovation, the ILM Trust expanded its mission.

In 2004, UMT received its charter from the Government of Punjab, officially becoming a university. Today, it comprises:
